KINDERGARTEN CURRICULUM

*Healthy Friendships and Bully Prevention*

Kindergarten students will learn about ways to make and keep friendships. We will read books about being a kind friend and ways to respectfully treat each other. They will practice ways to speak and act when there is conflict with another student.

Billy Bully is a book that shows how kids can lose friends by being hurtful...but also teaches how to earn friendships back one by one!

*Making and Keeping Friends*

Help! Is a book about how friends should not listen to gossip and rumors. A true friend is one who is always there for you and helps you when you need it. After the book, the students trace their hand and write or draw one way that they have helped out a classmate.

FIRST GRADE CURRICULUM

*Healthy Friendships and Bully Prevention*

It is important to stress to the students how vital they are in preventing bullying and inappropriate behaviors when they see it. They need to be empowered to stand up for one another and choose happy and healthy friendships. I will use books and videos to reiterate these points and help students learn to stand up to bullying!

The key points to remember about BULLYING are:

  1. There is an imbalance of power
  2. It is deliberate
  3. It is repeated

SECOND GRADE CURRICULUM

*Healthy Friendships and Bully Prevention*

A huge part in bully prevention and creating healthy friendships is to teach students how to treat each other on a daily basis. We will talk about personal behaviors. Choice of words, tone of voice and behavior all determine if students can make new friends and keep already formed friendships!

Something that I see teachers at WPS doing ALL THE TIME (and one of the most helpful things we can do as adults in these students’ lives) is to catch the kids when they are doing something desirable! Be sure that child knows how impressed you are with that behavior. When a student is having difficulty in a relationship with a peer, listen to the problem, reflect the feeling he/she is having, and have that student come up with possible strategies to help with the relationship. A little bit of processing in the moment can go a long way in helping a student to create healthy friendships that last.

We will watch a video about respecting differences in each other. It is ok to look different, have different names, come from different places, and like different acitivities. Being different is a good thing! Students will also create a "Me" shield of all things they like and areas where they excel.

WHOLE SCHOOL CURRICULUM

*You Are A Social Detective*

-For the first three classroom visits, I would like to train every student in this school to become a Social Detective.  I will read parts of the book, You Are A Social Detective, by Michelle Garcia Winner and will have activities to go with each lesson. The goal of this unit will be for students to learn about whole body listening, expected vs. unexpected behaviors and the feelings associated with the choices they make throughout each school day both for themselves and those around them.  Every student will earn a badge at the end if they can prove that they can keep their brain and body in the group and think with their eyes to show what is expected in all the different areas we play, learn, and go here at Woodman Park School! Click on the links below to see what your child has completed!

-Ask your child at home if they can show you whole body listening when you are giving important directions. Praise your child when he or she does something expected (i.e. did a chore the first time you asked). Tell them your heart is feeling proud! Or tell them you are feeling disappointed when the unexpected happens (i.e. fighting with siblings or not putting away toys when asked). What can your child do to fix the unexpected?

*Tolerance and Diversity*

In March we will begin to discuss tolerance and diversity within our school and community. Bullying and harassment can begin with an intolerance of a person who is perceived to be different than another. Creating a positive and safe culture in this school means celebrating and appreciating EVERY person here for his or her strengths and abilities. Students will learn that differences are something to be embraced …how boring would the world be if we were all the same?

The classroom activities will focus on developing a healthy self-concept. Students will recognize and highlight positive qualities in themselves. Everyone is good at something! Reminding students of their uniqueness and what makes them special can help when they are feeling frustrated and stuck on the things that are difficult. Developing a positive perception of themselves will allow kids to cope better when things do not go right. It will also enable students to see the strengths in each other and help others when needed.
